Hunting and fishing in West Virginia are time-honored traditions. Each year, more than 350,000 hunters take to West Virginia's woods in search of game. The largest hand cut stone building in North America, Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, formerly known as the Weston State Hospital, this West Virginia facility served as a sanctuary for the mentally ill during mid-1800. The history of the building holds fascinating stories of Civil War raids, a gold robbery, the "curative" effects of architecture, and the efforts of determined individuals to help better the lives of the mentally ill. Deerfield is an exciting 9 hole regulation course located at the Deerfield Country Club facility in Weston, WV. From the longest tees it presents 3,405 yards of golf for a par of 36. The course was designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan, ASGCA/Jack Kidwell and opened in 1978. The course rating is 36.5 with a slope rating of 120. Memberships are available as well as daily fees at this stunning golf course. Course is open year round and has a driving range. Please call for available tee times and pricing. Visit the Museum of American Glass to see a vast collection of brilliant colored and sparkling crystal glass by dozens of American manufacturers from 1860 to the present. The museum has a special focus on the period from 1900 to 1960 when American handmade glass presented an almost endless variety of patterns, colors and forms. Organized in 1982, the Hacker's Creek Pioneer Descendants are dedicated to the preservation of the rich history and genealogy of central West Virginia. This library, located in a park like setting, is home to an abundant variety of books, maps, and photo and manuscript collections to assist the family researcher and local historian.
